Endspurt in der Bibliothek – Library transition and more

A group of P4 students was introduced to the secondary library catalogue in preparation of visiting the secondary library with L1 next school year. The various information on the front page of the library catalogue, the advanced search function, their personal library account and the many links on their IDesk on IServ will help them using the school library – including the eBook portal – even better in future. One group gave a try to the different library catalogue and library account functionalities in the ICT room and started completing their work sheets.

And the winner is …

All primary students had the chance to vote for their favourite book cover. It was a hard choice to make and there were fans of every single book cover that had made it to the final round. In the end, however, there was an overall favourite: “Die Glücksbäckerei” by young artist Elke got an overall of 20.11 % votes.

The race for the remaining places on the winners podium was rather tight: 13.85 % vs. 12.90 %

ESRM Book Cover Competition 2017

In preparation of World Book Day our primary students had been creative and proven their love for books once again. They drew book covers and it sure was not easy to select that one book cover they would enter the competition with. Now all finalists are displayed in the library and after the May holidays students will vote for ESRM Book Cover 2017.

“Write what you want to write”

Creative minds and lots of potential writers are among our students who got to meet Peter Bently at the beginning of the week. Our guest author came to tell PP through P3 students some of his stories and –  in four individual and age appropriate sessions – a little bit about how stories happen.

With the help of Peter Bently’s professional guidance all students got to create their story character. The older year groups even wrote a 12 section story together and successfully mastered the challenge of writing and illustrating their own picture books in the end. Of course there was time for questions, little chats with the author and Peter Bently signed the little autograph cards many students had prepared in advanced or books they had brought along.

The children will definitely remember what they experienced that day:

  • The title of the book does not necessarily have to be known or chosen before starting to write.
  • As you start writing you might not know the end of your story.
  • While you write your story, you will have more ideas and your story might turn out completely different than you thought.
  • Illustrations can save you words sometimes.
  • Meeting a real author!

Our young booklovers sure enjoyed and cherished story time with Peter Bently!

Students with German as a second language in year 3 conjured a big smile on the primary librarian’s face and simply made her day. Announced by the teacher as little surprise it left the librarian speechless when the primary students presented their work. She keenly listened when the children explained all the activities in regard to “Where The Wild Things Are” and the making of their masterpiece.

What a fantastic project towards language competency and literacy with a beautiful result that can be admired just off the primary library!

“Horrible” day at ESRM

Students of the English section in year 5 through 8 were invited to the Horrible Science Show with famous Nick Arnold. Many of them had not only read the books from the “Horrible Series”, there were a number of Nick Arnold fans in the audience on 06 April. Some of the L2 students had probably been worrying about attending an English reading that was even about Science. This did not necessarily change when they were greeted by the secondary librarian with the words “This is going to be horrible – and even horrible Science”. It wasn’t for long until they would find out that they were actually up for an entertaining and fun experience of Science being brought to life.

Nick Arnold’s approach to answer scientific questions is most definitely going to stay in the minds of the students. Surface tension, gravity, pulling force, friction and the spitting cobra will for sure ring a bell in future – well, probably followed by a grin or laugh – and who knows if any of the students will ever use “inertia” as explanation for not being able to attend school 😉

Thanks a lot to Nick Arnold for visiting us, for bringing Horrible Science to life and for inspiring to take a deeper look into Sciences and where it happens in every day life. Thanks as well to all the brave, clever volunteers participating during Nick’s Horrible Science Show .

The dangerous life of a librarian

You think a librarian’s life is quite boring between all these books? You should have been with us yesterday in European School RheinMain’s auditorium to experience something different!

Chris Bradford brought his show on the Bodyguard Series to our school and our students from the English section (and their teachers and the librarian) had an amazing training on how to be a bodyguard. Right at the beginning Chris saved the librarian’s life from a threat assessment that has been carried out at the aula, and she will ever be thankful for his quick reaction!

As he himself said, Chris is a true believer in “practicing what you preach”, therefore we had lots of VIPs (including Justin Bieber) on stage to practice unarmed and armed (water pistol) combats. Girls and boys participating made a great team even though they came to realize the challenge of being Chris Bradford’s bodyguard.

By the way Chris signed a lot of the cards and posters he brought with him and I am sure ALL students will read his best-selling books. His Body Guard series, published in more than 20 languages, was awarded with more than 30 children’s books prizes and nominations.

Thank you, Chris!

Also a huge thank you to Verena Otto from cbj/Randomhouse for bringing Chris to our school.
